Hey Friends! It’s Tara from Two Posh Toddlers, I’m so happy to be here on the Raspberry Creek Blog. Since we’re in the thick of summer already in most of the US, let’s talk about swim & swim coverups for kids!!
Let’s jump in!
I know a lot of folks, even veteran sewists, are scared of swim but there’s no need to be. First you obviously want to pick your fabric, if doing a 2 piece you might do it all in one fabric or try for cute coordinates like we did here.
How ADORABLE are these cute popsicles (Pool Party line from Brittney Laidlaw for RCF) and coordinating stripes together?!! The fabulous thing about Raspberry Creek is that fabrics within certain themed lines are already coordinated, which takes out all of the guesswork and anxiety some sewists face when choosing fabrics.
For her suit I used the Laguna pattern from Little Lizard King. I chose to do the scoop, bikini top with tie neck and the cute exposed ruffle skirt. This pattern is so cute & quick to sew, it’s so rewarding and super duper cute in coordinates.
For the bottoms I chose the high waisted vintage style bottoms with ruffles so I could use those stripes a bit more and carry them to the bottoms for a perfect coordinating set. Now what about a coverup for when the kids get wet & cold or for when the weather changes slightly to a cool breeze?
We’ve got you “covered!” Haha 😉 I used Little Lizard King’s Waikiki pattern for this fun yet super functional coverup. I wanted to match/coordinate with my bathing suit colors so I chose the heathered yellow tri-blend jersey knit with a lime green zipper to tie in another color from the suit. This fabric is literally perfect for coverups, nice amount of stretch, but the weight and drape are perfect for summer wear. It’s not as heavy or hot like a French terry in summer, if I had to describe it I’d say it’s a step between a t-shirt weight and a French terry. I used the full zip, hood, optional pockets with short sleeves version of this pattern and it was the perfect thing to top off this beach bum’s outfit.
I think the best advice for conquering new things whether they be sewing swim, trying a new technique or really anything else new in life is to just “jump in!” So RUN now & grab some cute swim fabrics, and don’t forget to pick up something for an adorable matching coverup!
