Hi there! I'm Angie, and I'm excited to be back on the blog today with a twirly summer set using some fun RCF prints!
My daughter and I had been on the hunt for some neon fabric, so when it came time to choose fabric for a blog post, I searched "Neon" on the RCF website and came up with this Neon Paint Swirl print. She totally gasped when she saw it! I love love love to sew for her and get her input on fabric because she loves a little bit of everything. I also grabbed some of the Light Indigo Bleached Look Faux Denim Ponte De Roma...#1 because I'd been dying to try it, and #2 because all twirly dresses need a cute pair of shorts underneath!
We chose the rib knit base for the Neon Paint Swirls and it was perfect for what I had in mind, mashing the Wild Seeds Ilima Bikini top with the tiered skirt from the Aster dress. I cut and sewed the top according to the Ilima tutorial, but rather than finishing with the binding, I just added some clear elastic to the bottom edge and then cut and prepped my skirt pieces using the Aster tutorial. I had a bit of fabric left and couldn't let it get sucked into my bottomless scrap been, so I asked my daughter if she'd like a ruffle ("Mom, did you have to ask?!") With the ruffle added, I gathered and attached the skirt to the bikini top, and there it was, a super cute, twirly, neon sundress that my girl loves.
For the shorts, I modified the Wild Seeds Bluebell leggings, cutting them off above the knee and adding cuffs and back pockets that I traced from a pair of my daughter's store-bought leggings. As I worked on placing the pockets, I couldn't help but think they would be cute with a little embroidery...and I remembered that one day my kids had talked me into buying some neon embroidery floss (at the time, I didn't realize how incredibly slippery it was). I was short on time and had to eyeball/hand draw the design and do all my stitching in a moving vehicle, with the neon floss that didn’t want to cooperate (not recommended, lol!). It didn't turn out as perfect as I would have liked, but given the circumstances, it still provided a nice pop of color and tied the shorts in with the neon swirls in the dress. This flower, while not precisely shaped, is from the Wild Seeds Meadow & Ash Doll floral embroidery option.
The outfit wouldn't have been complete without a hair accessory, so I managed to sneak out one more strip of our Neon Paint Swirls and turned it into a simple headband, something my daughter has been asking for more and more these days. I was so pleased with how it all had come together! The dress is flowy and light with bright colors she adores, and the shorts will get so much wear, under dresses and with t-shirts and tank tops until Summer ends. If there's ever a specific color, print, or base you're looking for, definitely take a sec to search Raspberry Creek's website, because chances are you will find something that makes your kiddo's face light up!
Thanks for reading & Happy Sewing!!
Angie
