Oh my goodness, the Designer Studios have really exploded with talent, haven’t they?! I have so much fun browsing through the designs, and there are so many options that it can be incredibly difficult to choose!
Today, I want to spotlight designer Carrie Cantwell. Her designs are fun and whimsical, and it’s impossible to choose a favorite. I was especially drawn to Carrie’s style and color palette.
I usually sew for my kids, but as I browsed Carrie’s designs I was looking for something for myself. And, since it’s just about fall where I am, I was specifically looking for something that said “favorite hoodie.” I found just what I was looking for in her Sakura line.
In the end, after much internal debate, I chose this cherry blossom print with a coordinating polka dot from the Sakura line. I love how well they work together while still offering fun contrast. Not to mention, they’re some of my favorite colors.
My next decision was the fabric base. I wanted to choose one that would really show off the colors, that had good stretch, and that would, of course, make a cozy hoodie. I took a bit of a leap when I decided on the athletic base – I’ve only ever made bottoms and a romper out of it. But you better believe me that it did not disappoint!
I also needed a good hoodie pattern, so I went with Bronx from Styla Patterns. This one was the perfect choice because the options allowed me to really show off the contrasting prints, and the instructions made putting it together a cinch!
This turned out to be one of those projects where I couldn’t stop myself from trying it on after almost every step because I was too excited to see the finished product. I got more and more excited with each section I completed, and I was basically jumping up and down when I finished. I was a little worried that the athletic base wouldn’t have that cozy feeling I really wanted, but the smooth texture feels amazing against my skin! I definitely recommend!
The only problem? It’s not cool enough where I am in Utah for hoodies yet!
Carrie Cantwell is a surface designer based in Atlanta, Georgia. Her artwork is a whimsical exploration of shape, color and line. She has a particular fondness for drawing flowers and animals. Carrie's mission as an artist is to make people smile, because we need more joy in the world.
About her Sakura Collection:
Inspired by a trip to Japan, Sakura captures the magic of this beautiful country’s flora and fauna. Wild birds dot the landscape and sakura flowers explode in bloom, creating a symphony of color, texture and wonder. The collection invites reflection on nature and celebrates the Japanese mindfulness concept of shinrin-yoku or “forest bathing.” This form of ecotherapy invokes inner tranquility through escape into nature.
