Have you found some interesting prints and wondered how to incorporate them into a dress? You can have so much fun with it!
I used 2 different prints to showcase using borders for some different looks. My three daughters have completely different styles and I like playing into that to design their clothing.
My oldest daughter was looking for a maxi gown so she needed a horizontal border across the width of fabric. You could scale the print to be larger or smaller but I wanted the border repeat to be right about a yard since her skirt needed to be about 33 inches long. I ordered 2 yards to try to get 2 dresses out of the vertical border.
Pink Aloha Floral - horizontal border, 2 yd
Mr Golden Sun Border - Vertical border along the selvage, .5 yd
Instead of cutting two rectangles for the pink maxi dress, I chose to cut her skirt by width of fabric and use the one side seam for the invisible zipper. That gave me the flexibility to make another skirt for my middle daughter in the same print from the second yard. Then, because it printed just a portion of the border at the end of the 2 yards. I was able to cleverly cut all the ruffle pieces and a faux sash on one of the bodices using the partial border. The dresses turned out completely adorable and unique.
