This week on the blog, I am spotlighting the Brussels Washer Linen by Robert Kaufman. Linen is a good choice for button up tops for layering over tanks and t-shirts in warmer climates and under sweaters and sweatshirts in colder climates. Living in the Mid-South, I usually reserve Linen for summer sewing. But this yarn-dyed Denim shade really spoke to me as a fall dress. Sadly, this color is currently sold out but there are some great colors available that would be perfect for fall!
My typical fall and winter wardrobe consists of jeans and sweaters or joggers and sweatshirts. For work or church, I wear dress slacks and cardigans. Rarely do I wear dresses in the fall or winter, so I wanted to change that! The Brussels Washer Linen is a mid-weight linen/rayon blend that has the look of linen with the drape of rayon, making it a perfect choice for button-up tops, slacks, and dresses. It is so easy to care for as it can be washed and dried with only slight wrinkling. You also do not have to wonder which is the right or wrong side because it doesn’t have one!
I chose to make the Fringe Dress from Chalk and Notch. This is a pattern that I have been wanting to make for a while and this linen blend was the perfect choice. The fabric handled the details of the curved and faced neckline as well as the tabbed and cuffed sleeve beautifully. This linen also easily handled the linen setting on my iron and created nice, crisp folds when I needed them. It also held its shape well and was a breeze to sew as it did not shift around as it was handled.
Since this fabric does have some weight to it, I was a little concerned that the gathered skirt would be on the bulkier side, but that was not the case!
This is a dress that I will wear multiple seasons. I can pair it with short boots, tights, and a cardigan for Fall and Winter and with sandals for Spring and Summer. It truly can be a year-round fabric choice!

Love the dress and the fabric. Wish I knew how and where to get the dress pattern.
