My name is Teal, and I do not shy away from color. I love jewel tones, and this incredibly pigmented ponte de roma print has almost all my favorite colors and seemed like a great print for fall. I ordered two yards and dreamed up a really fun pair of pants. Once I received the fabric, I knew it didn’t want to be pants. I live in Houston, Texas and love pieces that I can wear year-round, and there’s a very small window for cute pants. I tend to prefer shorts if the weather is above 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 80% of the year here! I couldn’t shake the idea of a slightly fitted dress in this gorgeous print so I could wear it as often as possible.

If you’ve never used ponte, it’s such an interesting knit fabric. It has a very distinct look to it in that you can see the purl and knit on both sides of the fabric, and it doesn’t stretch a ton. It’s known for being a more structured knit because it doesn’t have tons of drape (at least compared to something like a rayon spandex), and it holds its shape well. Here’s a close up of this print on ponte. Aren’t these colors amazing?

This ponte is made with rayon, nylon, and spandex and is 290 GSM. I found this fabric to have at least 50% stretch in both directions with excellent recovery. It’s on the thicker side, but cutting and sewing it is very easy since it doesn’t roll. It is actually probably one of the easiest knit fabrics I’ve sewn with!

I chose the Styla Vail pattern for my dress, as I struggle to wear any outfit without pockets. This pattern does not include a sleeveless option, but I chose to fully line the bodice rather than use the facing included in the pattern and used the burrito roll method to finish the armholes. Vail requires front bodice and back skirt darts, and they were super easy in this fabric. I also understitched the pockets and the neckline. Looking at these colorful flowers while sewing up this fabric gave me lots of joy!

When I finished sewing up my garment, I put it on and did a little happy dance. This dress is so versatile. I can wear it with sandals for a casual cute day or dress it up with heels.

I even paired it with my cardigan made out of one of the very first fabrics I bought from RCF - this bamboo sweatshirt fleece. I think it will transition well when the temps here in Texas finally start to fall!
