‘Tis the season for fancy outfits and I want to share my tips on statement pieces for the holiday season!
Most folks, around this time of year, are looking for outfits that stand out for all of the various holiday get-togethers, parties or soirées that their communities will be hosting. Specifically, in the sewing community, we are more than likely MAKING something to wear to these events. I am sure that we can agree, that if we are sewing for a celebration, we want it to look GREAT. Whether you are looking to be the “Belle of the Ball” or simply looking to make something to elevate your look, what you choose to wear will make a STATEMENT.
So, let’s talk about my opinion on statement pieces in terms of clothing. To me, a statement piece of clothing has some type of visual interest that draws the eyes to it. In my opinion, three main ways to create these kinds of pieces is through color, texture, shine and silhouette (this isn’t all inclusive, just my opinion 😊).
One easy way to make that statement is in fabric choice; think texture, color, shine/sheen and pattern. When it comes to fabric, these attributes can draw attention it due to the appearance of the fabric alone. Whether it’s the texture of velvet or the high sparkle of sequins, the fabric “speaks” on its own. Using these attention-grabbing fabrics do really well with simple sewing pattern designs because all the work is done by the fabric itself and isn’t lost in complex sewing designs.

The second way I like to make a statement with my clothing is through silhouette! Think DRRRRAAAAMMAAA; for example, sleeves, interesting necklines, hemlines and drape all add visual interest to garments. I LOVE a statement piece with an element of drama 😉! For this option, I would choose a part of your body that you want to either highlight or balance.
Since I am a bottom-heavy gal, I love a dramatic sleeve or interesting neckline. It draws the attention from my bottom half upwards; helping to balance out my figure. But in this case, I chose to highlight that part of my body (I do actually love my legs). Although I am bottom heavy, I do love my legs in skirts and mini dresses. Since my legs are the focal point, I opted to sew up the Malika skirt from VikiSews (Link here).
The Malika skirt has a high and wide slit; drawing attention to the skirt itself. The pattern calls for suiting type fabrics subsequently I opted for the Robert Kaufman Flannel from Raspberry Creek Fabrics (link here).
**PRO TIP: I always grab an extra yard of Cotton Plaids; one, to account for pattern matching, mistakes AND shrinkage after laundering**
In this instance, I am using BOTH fabric pattern AND silhouette for my statement piece. I kept the top simple using Raspberry Creek Fabrics Black 4 way stretch French Terry for the bodysuit underneath so I wouldn’t distract from the skirt. And I love the way it turned out. RCF has some AMAZING wovens that would work for this skirt and I will definitely be making this again!
Hopefully you found something helpful in my blog today about statement pieces. Until next time!
