Like many of my fellow sewists, I love gifting handmade items to my friends and family during the holidays or for special occasions. There is just something so special about watching the joy and surprise on the receiver's face when they open their gift. I truly do enjoy and get excited for those moments! I love the planning of the gift...from choosing the materials to finding just the right project that fills a need of the recipient. But sometimes, circumstances don’t allow for a lot of planning. Have you ever found yourself needing a last minute gift? Or you had the best of
intentions and really planned to make a gift but found yourself crunched for time and funds? Handmade gift giving doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful! I have a few of my favorite last minute and completely free handmade gift giving ideas to share!
When I find myself needing a quick and low cost gift idea, I check out Made for Mermaids freebies section on their website. It is loaded with fabulous and quick gift ideas...many of them only requiring fabric scraps or remnants! Below are a few of my favorites featuring the Robert Kaufman flannel from the shop.
The Biana Blanket Wrap: This stylish and functional wrap is so quick and easy to sew up. The wrap uses less than two yards of fabric and to save even more time, I left the naturally frayed selvage exposed instead of creating the fringe in the tutorial. Another bonus: a cut chart is included in the tutorial so no need to spend time printing and putting pattern pieces together! I almost feel guilty calling this handmade! It is the perfect gift for that person who loves to cozy up on the couch with a book. It is also great to throw on while sitting by the fire sipping hot cocoa...allowing movement that a blanket or throw would not. I know I plan to gift several Biana Blanket Wraps this year!
Christmas Tree Pillow: This free pattern is a part of the 12 days of freebies event from a previous year and it is a great use of fabric remnants. Although meant for wovens, knits can be used as well. Don’t have any fiberfill to use for stuffing the pillow and there is no time to run to the craft store? Use fabric scraps! The included projector file is also a time saver. This pillow would make a great hostess gift or gift for teachers.
Stocking Stuffers and other gift ideas: I am always looking for small gifts to fill my daughter’s stocking. Another great idea from Made from Mermaids is the Reusable Facial Rounds. Small scraps of the flannel from the shop are perfect for this project as natural fibers are recommended. There are so many of these projects that are perfect for woven fabrics...the Playing Card Holder, Travel Zip Bag (perfect for a guy that is hard to shop for!), or a Ruffle Scrunchie to match a flannel dress.
The Biana Blanket Wrap I have shared with you is actually a gift for my very first best friend, my sister. And her best friend, Buttercup, will get a matching Dog Bandana in the flannel. I know she will love it! I hope this list gives you some ideas for handmade gift giving that will take a little stress off of you this busy season. Happy Holidays!
