Hi, I am Chinmy, and I am so excited to be here with you today. I have spent most of the last 6 years of my life in either maternity or nursing clothes. Being totally frustrated with finding the styles and patterns I love is what gave me the push to start sewing for me in addition to the kids. I haven’t looked back since then and I have got the warm weather styles down pat. The cooler weather pieces on the other hand was still a challenge.
When the weather started cooling down around here, I started my hunt for that elusive ‘perfect nursing hoodie/pullover’ again. For each of us we have a preference and I am not a pull up or pull down and nurse kind of person, but at the same time I am not the kind to hide in the restroom to nurse either. Being mildly sensitive to the textures of the fabric means I avoid layers most every time. Having discreet and modest nursing access in my outfit becomes a priority. And using invisible zip accesses was my preferred choice.
I was all geared up to hack a hoodie pattern that I had when Peek A Boo pattern shop came out with their Pinnacle Pullover pattern. This pattern has the zipper access for nursing already incorporated into the pattern. From experience I know that opening an invisible zip one handed while holding the squirming baby is harder on stretchier fabrics than on woven. So I needed something that was thick enough to be worn by itself, has enough stretch that the pattern calls for but not so much that the zipper becomes a pain.
Sweatshirt Fleece was my choice. I was going to choose the Club Base Fabric when I came across the Bamboo Cotton Spandex Sweatshirt Fleece. I have heard good reviews from almost every one who has used this fabric and decided to give it a try. And this Heathered Chocolate Brown Bamboo Sweatshirt Fleece with the thick, soft and cozy backing was the perfect find. Unlike the Club Sweatshirt Fleece this has a lot more stretch and is slightly thicker. I would make a note that the greatest stretch for this fabric goes along the length of the fabric instead of the width of the fabric that we are usually used to. That is, it has a minimal stretch selvage to selvage and maximum stretch along the grain line.
Since this fabric was a solid color and I did not have to worry about directional prints, I matched the stretch guideline on the pattern along the maximum stretch of the fabric. And because this has a lot more stretch than the club Sweatshirt Fleece, I did not adjust the Cuffs, Waistband or neckband pieces. The pattern uses invisible zip for nursing access that goes all the way down both sides of the center panel. I made sure to use some double sided wonder tape while attaching the zipper to make sure there was no shifting while sewing through the thick and stretchy fabric.
The pullover turned out amazing and I love how warm and cozy it is. The pullover also has optional pockets and it's such a useful addition and I love how it's also quick and easy access!
In addition to the pullover I also made my littlest a cozy Joggers from the Lowland Kids Pattern.
We have a lot of waiting out in the cold for school bus pick-ups and drop offs in the upcoming months. And my biggest struggle last year was to dress the baby warm, yet not too warm. And these are perfect for those. Again, I did not adjust the cuffs and I went all out and made pockets too.
I think it pairs perfectly well with this ice cream panel from the summer release. It have paired it with the Farm Stripes from the Fall Collection in the modeled pictures.
The colorway I used is the Heather Chocolate Brown and it is beautiful. There are more amazing colors available in the shop. You can use the reverse side of the fabric for details for a fun pop of texture. Just make sure to choose the retail fabric option in the filters when you do a search to see all the choices. Hope you all have a warm and cozy winter wrapped up in our favorite RCF goodness!
