Have you tried RCF’s oatmeal French Terry yet? If not, this blog is perfect for you.
I had always wanted to try RCF’s oatmeal fabric, because I have heard so many people like it. I had to make a new dress for myself for my husband’s graduation, so I decided to get some oatmeal fabric to give it a try.
I always love gender neutral prints so I don’t usually have much floral print fabric. I decided to let my husband choose the print for me. He chose the Eggplant Mauve Olive Blue and Peach watercolor Floral print. I really like what he picked and the oatmeal fabric is definitely so easy and fun to sew with.
There are a few reasons why I like oatmeal fabric.First of all, I like the way the texture of the print looks. I like light background on the fabric but I like it not too plain as well. So the texture has a vintage feeling and also matches the print much better.

Second, I like the way the texture of the material feels. I always prefer natural fiber fabric for myself and my kids. So I use cotton spandex and cotton French Terry most of the time. Oatmeal French Terry is much softer than French Terry. And it gets softer after washing.

Third, I like the recovery of the fabric. It’s 4-way-stretch. So it’s perfect for making joggers, sweaters, and dresses. This type of fabric is good for all knit patterns.
Fourth, I like the slightly thicker weight of the fabric. We live in Utah, so the weather changes a lot throughout the day. This oatmeal fabric can be used all year and I especially like it during the spring and fall time.
I used the Magnolia pattern from Styla pattern company. I love that this pattern has a pockets option, because as a mom, the pockets are always very helpful for my small personal items. I like a little bit longer length for my dresses, so I added two inches on the bottom. It took about 1.75 yards to finish this dress. Cutting the big pieces like the skirt can be challenging. So make sure you cut the skirt part first to make sure you have enough fabric for it. (Then you can use the rest of the fabric for the small pieces like front and back bodices, and sleeves.)
I wasn’t patient enough so I wore this dress on our small trip in FL.

The day we went to the beach wasn’t too hot and also had some nice and cool wind. So this dress was perfect for it. We grabbed some pictures while we were at the beach.
If you are still thinking about trying RCF’s oatmeal. Please don’t wait. Just go for it! You will love it more than you think.I know I will need to order more to make something for my little girl.
