It’s definitely cozy fabric season in my neck of the woods. When I think of soft, warm cozy fabric, flannel is one that comes to mind. I am always drawn to the beautiful Robert Kaufman flannels that are in the shop, especially this time of year. I love browsing the wide variety of yarn dyed patterns in beautiful colors in the Raspberry Creek shop. In this post I am going to show off just how versatile of a fabric it can be - the possibilities of things to make with it are endless!
First off, flannel can make a great blouse, shirt/shacket or top! A button down shirt or shacket is probably the most common made top out of flannel, but it can make a great top or blouse too! I used a simple peasant style pattern, the Timbre from Love Notions, to make a simple flannel top. I added the ruffle at the end of the sleeve by sewing a casing a couple inches above the sleeve hem and threading elastic through it. I love that I can throw a vest over it or wear it plain. Regardless, it is so soft and warm to wear!
Another option is a top like the Fringe by Chalk and Notch which comes in both womens and kids sizing. This red and black buffalo check made the perfect holiday top!
Other pattern suggestions that would work well include the Cadence by Love Notions, Wren Blouse and Dress by Chalk and Notch, or the Cheyenne or Phoenix Blouse by Hey June Handmade.
Of course a button down or shacket it always a great option with flannel! For this one I used the Aria pattern by Love Notions. Other great patterns include the Fairmont Shacket by Hey June Handmade, the Den Jacket by Chalk and Notch or the Lumberjack by Patterns for Pirates.
For kids, Birch pattern by Sew a Little Seam works great! Other good options include the Treble Clef Coat by Love Notions, Detroit by Little Lizard King or the Lumberjack Youth by Patterns for Pirates.
The flannel is also great for lining coats and adding a little warmth. I used the Taos flannel to line the Octave Coat by Love Notions. It has a little more thickness and gives this coat a fun inside.
I used a mini houndstooth to line this linen Joy Jacket by Chalk and Notch giving it a nice weight as well.
Flannel makes the best pajama pants of course! My boys love the many pair of RK flannel pants I have made them through the years. There are lots of great patterns out there but our favorite is the Thomas Track pants for both kids and men.
But don’t think you can dress up a pair of flannel pants either! I made a pair of Allegro joggers by Love Notions in flannel and paired them with a velvet top and could easily get away with wearing my pajamas while looking fancy!
Lastly, don’t forget about the accessories! The flannel made the best reversible library bag for my book loving girl! It has such a great weight that it is perfect for a project like this.
As you can see, flannel is for more than just pajama pants and shackets! Trust me - you will fall in love with all the ways you can sew with flannel. You can shop all the beautiful flannels in the shop HERE.
