Apart of Erica Catherine's US State Flower Collection, the Syringa or "Mock Orange" Flower represents the State of Idaho. The sweet Syringa flower is shown on top of a yellow color background.
The Syringa also called "mock Orange" was adopted as the state flower of Idaho in 1931. While the syringa wasn't named the state flower until 1931, it could be found on their state seal in 1890 and represented Idaho in the 1890 world's exposition. The species of flower Lewisii, is named after the Meriweather Lewis (Lewis and Clark expedition.) The nick name Mock Orange comes from the fragrance the blooms give off that is similar to that of orange blossoms. The Syringa can be found along streams, dry ravines, and canyons making is adaptable for quite a few types of soil types. They range from British Columbia to North California, over to Idaho and western Montana. The sturdy stems were used as arrows, pipe stems, combs while the flowers and leaves could crushed and used for medicinal purposes.
Inspired by the natural and antique details that call to Erica's Old soul, she aims to bring that special spirit to all of her designs. Each drawing is created by hand using a mixture of graphite drawing with watercolor layering over the top to create the ethereal and vintage inspired work that harks back to turn of the century botanical illustration.
