Scarlet Carnation Flower, Ohio State Flower, Purple Background, Red Flowers, US State Flowers

Designed by: Erica Catherine Illustration

Apart of Erica Catherine's US State Flower Collection, the Scarlet Carnation represents the State of Ohio. The popular Carnation flower is shown on top of a purple color background. The Scarlet Carnation was adopted as the state flower in 1908. The carnation was chosen in honor of the late president William Mckinley who was a Ohioan. He was often seen wearing a scarlet carnation for good luck. Representing love and respect, the scarlet carnation is the most popular cut flower to give. In fact during October to April during homecoming and prom season hundred of thousands of corsages and boutonnieres feature the Carnation. Widely popular as planted flowers across the state they can be found lining state highways, roadways, airports, lawn, gardens painting the landscapes with luxurious reds. One of the most notable places these flowers can be seen is lining the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus. This flower is so well loved that Carnation City, Ohio hold an annual Carnation Festival to celebrate the state flower.

Inspired by the natural and antique details that call to Erica's Old soul, she aims to bring that special spirit to all of her designs. Each drawing is created by hand using a mixture of graphite drawing with watercolor layering over the top to create the ethereal and vintage inspired work that harks back to turn of the century botanical illustration.
