It is said that Governor George Atkinson praised the flower saying \"I know none more beautiful and none more common in West Virginia.\" After an overwhelming majority vote cast by the state's school children and the Governor's recommendation the Rhododendron was named the official state flower. Every July this flower blooms with either pink or white flower clusters, sometimes boasting up to 25 flowers per cluster. The state is not just adorned with the flower but almost over run by it! They can be find in all regions of the state except the very most western counties. This is partly to do with the adaptability of the plant. It can grow in most conditions from sunny hillsides to under shaded tree canopies.
