Apart of Erica Catherine's US State Flower Collection, the Rhododendron Flower represents the State of West Virginia. The well known Rhododendron flower is shown on top of a purple color background.
The Rhododendron was adopted as the state flower of West Virginia in 1903. It is said that Governor George Atkinson praised the flower saying "I know none more beautiful and none more common in West Virginia." After an overwhelming majority vote cast by the state's school children and the Governor's recommendation the Rhododendron was named the official state flower. Every July this flower blooms with either pink or white flower clusters, sometimes boasting up to 25 flowers per cluster. The state is not just adorned with the flower but almost over run by it! They can be find in all regions of the state except the very most western counties. This is partly to do with the adaptability of the plant. It can grow in most conditions from sunny hillsides to under shaded tree canopies. The Rhododendron normally grows to be about 15 feet but some can reach upwards of 40 feet, gaining it's botanical name "Rhododendron maximum"
Inspired by the natural and antique details that call to Erica's Old soul, she aims to bring that special spirit to all of her designs. Each drawing is created by hand using a mixture of graphite drawing with watercolor layering over the top to create the ethereal and vintage inspired work that harks back to turn of the century botanical illustration.
