Iris Flower, Tennessee State Flower, Yellow Background, Purple Flowers, US State Flowers

Designed by: Erica Catherine Illustration

Apart of Erica Catherine's US State Flower Collection, the Iris Flower represents the State of Tennessee. The beautiful purple flowers are shown on top of a yellow color background.

The Iris flower was adopted as the state flower in of Tennessee in 1933. In the 1930's with a wave of gardening enthusiasts a love of the Iris flower swept the state. With this wave of excitement for the Iris flower, it was chosen as the state flower. Funny enough, the state already had chosen a state flower! 14 years before the passionflower had been chosen as the state flower by school children. When the Iris flower was put legislation it did not sit will with everyone, especially not passionflower enthusiasts. The debate over which flower to use kept the decision in limbo until 1973 when the Iris was named the official state flower. The iris is still known and loved all across the state today. It is featured on the Tennessee license plate, celebrated in songs, and each spring a the Iris Festival honors the flower.

Inspired by the natural and antique details that call to Erica's Old soul, she aims to bring that special spirit to all of her designs. Each drawing is created by hand using a mixture of graphite drawing with watercolor layering over the top to create the ethereal and vintage inspired work that harks back to turn of the century botanical illustration.
