Funny enough, the state already had chosen a state flower! 14 years before the passionflower had been chosen as the state flower by school children. When the Iris flower was put legislation it did not sit will with everyone, especially not passionflower enthusiasts. The debate over which flower to use kept the decision in limbo until 1973 when the Iris was named the official state flower. The iris is still known and loved all across the state today.
