Apart of Erica Catherine's US State Flower Collection, the Hibiscus Flower represents the State of Hawaii. The tropical yellow flowers are shown on top of a purple color background. Each piece is first hand drawn by Erica Catherine using graphite and watercolor to create a vintage inspired feeling.
The yellow Hibiscus flower was adopted as the state flower of Hawaii in 1988. The yellow hibiscus is only found in Hawaii and grows on all of the main islands but is so rare that only a few remain in the wild now and is considered an endangered species. In Hawaiian culture, the hibiscus is a symbol of old royalty and respect. The yellow hibiscus flower can also represent fortune, good luck, happiness, and sunshine. Originally all colors and types of hibiscus represented the islands of Hawaii as the state flower. It wasn't until 1988 that the native yellow hibiscus became their state flower. Along side the state flower each Hawaiian Island also has a designated flower of its' own.
Inspired by the natural and antique details that call to Erica's Old soul, she aims to bring that special spirit to all of her designs. Each drawing is created by hand using a mixture of graphite drawing with watercolor layering over the top to create the ethereal and vintage inspired work that harks back to turn of the century botanical illustration.
