Apart of Erica Catherine's US State Flower Collection, the Coast Rhododendron flower represents the State of Washington. The pink flowers are shown on top of a blue color background.
The Coast Rhododendron was adopted as the state flower of Washington in 1892 after the Women across the state organized a state wide vote to select a flower for the World's Fair in Chicago that would be held the following year. More than 15,000 women case a ballot in the election to choose between the Clover and the Coast Rhododendron. in 1959 state legislation officially name the prized evergreen shrub as the state flower. This flower is so prized in the state that it is protected from being picked and removed in the wild where it is growing naturally. The beautiful flowers and scent they give off in the spring time aren't the only thing that makes this shrub amazing. The plant typically reach between 6-8 feet in maturity, but can continue growing upwards of 20-30 feet tall! Despite it's beauty the rhododendron leaves and flowers are both toxic to wildlife and humans and have been known to have ill effects to grazing sheep.
Inspired by the natural and antique details that call to Erica's Old soul, she aims to bring that special spirit to all of her designs. Each drawing is created by hand using a mixture of graphite drawing with watercolor layering over the top to create the ethereal and vintage inspired work that harks back to turn of the century botanical illustration.
